Brannon Finney

Boat Captain in Petersburg

Brannon Finney, a fisherman, maintains a fleet of boats in Petersburg, Alaska, where she works. Finney has been fishing the eastern seas off the Kenai Peninsula for over two decades and has built an incredible collection of world-class catches. Working in Prince William Sound enables her to visit beautiful areas including as Valdez, Cordova, Ketchikan, Juneau, Sitka, and Whittier.

When she is not out at sea harvesting or conducting port maintenance and prepping her vessel, Alaskan Girl, for its next excursion, she is not unusual to take advantage of the wonderful landscape in the area. When she's on an adventure, whether it's skiing, rock climbing, kayaking, or just taking a stroll in one of the region's many wonderful natural preservation zones, a selfie is never far from her sight.

Brannon Finney and her all-female crew are gearing up for another busy day on the boat in Alaska's Prince William Sound. Having a female boat commander in an all-female fleet is even rarer than having a female crew.

According to Brannon Finney, it is no longer a mystery that women are equally as competent as males. Life and work onboard a commercial fishing vessel, on the other hand, are not easy! The majority of the ladies I've talked with have exhibited little interest in either my profession or my personal life. The issue is that I don't have any other options. For the last two decades, I've been catching fish here. That's all I've got.

Brannon Finney started his work as a crew member on fishing boats while she was in his early twenties. She says that as a youngster, she was able to walk on water for the first time. It's still thrilling to walk on the beach for the first time after spending so much time in the sea. Irregular leg motions, such as taking an unintentional step, are uncommon. It all comes down to regaining a sense of stability and balance.

If you're on Prince William Sound, the weather might change in an instant. Wind speeds may increase from zero to fifty miles per hour in ten minutes. You must keep your eyes on the prize like a sailor in such seas. According to OSHA, commercial fishing in Alaska is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Maintain vigilance and ensure that your safety equipment is in excellent working condition at all times. Tragic events occur much too often in this location.

Her vessel's upkeep has a direct impact on the safety of her crew and the long-term viability of her company. Commercial fishing boats, according to Brannon Finney, contain a variety of systems and components that need frequent maintenance.
"Take the hull, for example," Brannon Finney adds. A regular inspection of the structure should be performed to look for cracks and leaks, stress areas, rusted through holes, and stringer anomalies. You will also need to remove the 93-ton vessel from the ocean, remove any barnacles and rust from exposed areas, prime all exposed areas, wash the vessel with a pH-balanced detergent, and finish the operation with a government-compliant wax and paint.
